ROCKVILLE, MD - The American Society of Human Genetics (ASHG) thanks Congress for sustaining its support for biomedical research in the FY 2024 conference agreement by funding the National Institutes of Health (NIH) at $47.1 billion. In a constrained funding environment, the Society’s members appreciate Congress’ efforts to prioritize lifesaving research and new medical discoveries. To ensure that progress in biomedical research can continue uninterrupted, ASHG is urging Congress to pass FY 2024 appropriations as quickly as possible and avoid a government shutdown.

ASHG is especially happy to see continued support for work at NIH related to human genetics and genomics, especially for programs focused on key areas like community engagement and diagnosis of rare genetic diseases.

Human genetics and genomics research advocates around the country have been actively engaging their members of Congress about the need for sustained human genetics and genomics research funding by sharing their discoveries and how their work advances efforts to address our nation’s human health challenges.

The Society champions strong federal investment in science through NIH and other federal agencies. Scientific research is essential to improving public health and well-being, strengthening the nation’s economy, and ensuring the U.S. remains a world leader in the scientific enterprise.

If Congress fails to act quickly on these bills and secure appropriations for FY 2024, biomedical research could grind to a halt as NIH and many other parts of the federal government are forced to shut down. ASHG encourages its members to contact their lawmakers to urge them to pass these full-year appropriations bills as soon as possible to ensure NIH can continue its vital work in biomedical research.
